Webinar 5 June - Students' top 10 priorities for education

The recent LSL Summer School was spiced up by a group of student reporters, "Scoop Ducks", formed by Italian and Irish students. During the event they interviewed the participants, took pictures and video clips, sent tweets, wrote blog posts, and contributed to the programme by delivering presentation on "Top 10 priorities for education by students" and contributing on a following panel discussion.

This highlight presentation of the Summer School will be delivered as a webinar by the students themselves to a wider audience. The webinar will take place on 5 June, at 6:30 PM (CEST, Brussels time). Enrol here!

The webinar will be delivered 4 students of the Francesco Redi scientific high school in Arezzo (Italy): Andrea Liguori (19), Lorenzo Giambagli (18), Gabriele Redigonda (18) and Chiara Fraticelli (18).

New LSL practice videos published

Video is a powerful way to share and demonstrate good practice. The Living Schools Lab partners and schools have been created videos to capture ways to embed ICT efficiently across the whole school. In this first set of videos can be found country examples and some school level examples.

Celebrating the Living Schools Lab Awards winners in Dublin

LSL Awards winner: Best Regional Hub - IRELANDThe winners of three main award categories and eight “spot prizes” were revealed during the Living Schools Lab Summer School in Dublin on 17 May. The LSL Awards were to encourage and motivate the LSL teachers and teams during the Y2 of the project, and to give recognition to teachers, schools, and teams for their exemplary work in the project. The Awards were presented by Diana Bannister, University of Wolverhampton and Bart Verswijvel, European Schoolnet.

The main LSL Award winners

Best Kit

The aim of a kit was to ask teachers to produce a kit of reusable ideas by others. The kits show how the author has collaborated on the theme, inspired others, and built in opportunities for peer review. The Best Kit award was given to Skevi Demetriou Geroskipou A’ Primary School, Cyprus. According to the jury, Skevi’s kit on webquests is a model that can be replicated and provides a valuable framework for others.

Best Regional Hub

The selection of the winner was not easy, but eventually the award was given to a regional hub that had successfully engaged the whole team with the project both online and face-to-face, and demonstrated real sharing and mainstreaming of practice and connectedness. The observation visits, the national blog, the presentations at webinars and contributions during the Summer School were in favour of this team.

The Best Regional Hub award was given to Ireland: Sarah Jayne Carey and her team (Maria Broderick and Salvo Cacciato) in Coláiste Bríde, Presentation Secondary School; Gearoid O Duibhir for his FPT45 model and Aelsa Carroll (St. Fintans High School) for realising the need to take baby STEPS to bring about whole school change. Led ably by their National Co-ordinator Karin Whooley and further motivated throughout by Grainne Walsh. The judges highlighted the success of the regional hub blog in the motivation and engagement of the wider community and sharing of practice. The AP schools within the Irish hub are St. Patrick’s Primary School Tuam, De La Salle College, Killina Presentation Secondary School, and St. Corban’s BNS.

Best Video

Within the LSL project, all schools were encouraged to submit a video to showcase how ICT can be mainstreamed across a whole school. Some schools worked together creating joint videos and there were national videos as well. The most successful videos achieve to inspire and motivate, share best practice, and provide practical advice for others to follow.

The winning video was considered an example of how to work best in a group and also encouraging team work. The video looked at the pedagogical change as well as technology: the award of the Best video was given to Rasa Januškevičienė, from the Vilnius Vyturys primary school, Lithuania.

Spot Prizes

There were also some spot prizes that were identified for people during the course of the project to recognise individuals and schools who have engaged with the work of the project, showcasing, demonstrating and energising whole school change.

School validation of ICT products at the Turku region

The Living Schools Lab project is developing a validation methodology to help ICT providers and school to collaborate on ICT product validation pilots. In this video, Jouni Paakkinen from Finland explains how validations are carried out in schools at the Turku region.

LSL will also organise a workshop for industry representatives and EC-funded projects on "How to run school validations across Europe". The workshop will take place on 5 June in Brussels. For further information on the workshop, click here.

Just a few days left to the Living Schools Lab Summer School in Dublin! From 16 to 18 May, over 120 teachers, students and project partners will join in this unique event to share best practice, reflect on the results of the project and plan for future activities. 
Whether you can join us in Dublin or not, you will be able follow the event thanks to our team of student ‘scoop duck’ reporters from Ireland and Italy. They will share their thoughts, pictures and main outcomes from the activities on their blog,

The LSL Summer School includes interesting keynotes, lesson learnt from regional hubs and pan-European themes, professional development workshops and discussion on validation services and accreditation for teachers, and of course the LSL Awards ceremony.
Regional hubs good practice - Tips on how to use video conference in teaching and learning
Regional hubs have proved to be a good place for teachers to share good practices and tips on how to incorporate the use of technology across the school curriculum. Latest example comes from the Irish regional hub, where Maria Broderick (Living Schools Lab teacher in Coláiste Bríde school, Dublin) led a webinar to showcase the best aspects of her classroom practice, which includes daily video conferencing with another school and a wide range of ICT tools and applications.
Maria Broderick teaches higher level Leaving Certificate Maths in Coláiste Bríde, an all-girls LSL Advanced School with 950 students. She connects her classroom daily, via video conference, with a school in a different district, where two additional students join her class to take higher level maths. Through 'live linking' all students actively participate in the class. 
Within her webinar, called “ICT and the Connected Maths Classroom”, Maria gave plenty of useful advice and tips on how to teach via video conference. She also shared information on the ICT tools that work for her and her students in their maths teaching and learning. The methods Maria described could be used by any teacher, not just maths teachers, who wish to engage their students and connect classrooms.

Useful advice and easily replicable ideas 

The Irish teachers attending the webinar found the tools and links shared by Maria Broderick very useful. They showed their interest in replicating some of her good practices within their own classrooms. “Really interesting to see how using ICT in such innovative ways has enhanced the teaching and learning of maths and also created real life friendships for Maria’s students”, commented Gráinne, one of the attendees.

Workshop invitation - How to run school validations across Europe, 5 June

5 June 2014, workshop invitation for industry and EC-funded projects

Running pan-European school pilots where teachers and pupils evaluate new technologies can be both extremely challenging and expensive. This free workshop from the Living Schools Lab project will enable research projects, ICT suppliers and other interested organisations to understand how European Schoolnet runs both large-scale and small scale school validations with its 30 supporting Ministries of Education.

The workshop will explain:

  • The results you can expect from using different types of evaluation methodologies and instruments.
  • How to motivate teachers to participate in your own school pilots.
  • The successful operational guidelines that European Schoolnet uses in pan-European school pilots, some of which involve over 2,000 classes.
  • How to design your own validation with schools and teachers in different countries.
  • How your project or company can use a new turnkey action research service involving schools in the Living Schools Lab network.

During the workshop there will also be an opportunity to visit the Future Classroom Lab, a fully equipped, reconfigurable, teaching and learning space developed by European Schoolnet, its 30 supporting Ministries of Education and leading educational technology suppliers.


Online survey - Have your say on teaching and learning 21st century skills at school

KeyCoNet project has just launched a public online consultation to inform its forthcoming recommendations on improving the implementation of a competence based approach in school education.

The survey is targeted at teachers, head teachers, parents, students and all other education stakeholder groups (including Ministries of Education, universities, NGOs, industry etc.). The stakeholder groups survey can be taken in English, while all other target groups can take the survey here in one of the following languages: DE, EE, EL, EN, ES, FI, FR, NL, NO, PO, PT and RO. All versions of the consultation will be online until 16 June 2014

Filling the survey will take maximum 10 minutes and you could be one of our lucky winners to be invited to participate in KeyCoNet’s final conference in Greece at the end of October 2014!

Presenting student work - Join the next Twitter discussion on 1 April
ICT provides new opportunities for students not just to create but also present their work at a school. Living Schools Lab invites teachers to discuss on how the presentation of student work is organised on Tuesday 1 April, at 8-9 PM (CET). The discussion will be held through Twitter, using a specific hashtag #LSLCHAT and will be open to anyone. Come and share your experiences, learn new tips from other participants and debate!
To find the ongoing discussion, search at Twitter for the hashtag #LSLCHAT and contribute by adding the same hashtag to your tweet.
The Living Schools Lab Twitter discussions follow the model established by other educational networks like Edchat and Edchatie. Moderated by Bart Verswijvel the Twitter discussions take place usually every fortnight.

Driving future developments with students - Interview with Aelsa Carroll

The only thing to drive the future development of ICT in the school is the students themselves”. This is what Aelsa Carroll from the St. Fintan’s High School, Dublin, explains based on her experience as a teacher in one of the Living Schools Lab schools.

In the interview, Aelsa Carroll reflects on how being involved in the Living School Lab project helped her to bring about changes in the teaching and learning taking place in her classrooms. LSL also led to whole-school change as an e-Learning Team has been formed to help plan for the on-going integration of ICT across the curriculum and the school.
